Friday the 14th November 2008
For today's lesson, as a class we watched the opening sequence of hide and seek to give us an insight of what the codes and conventions of the thriller genre are. As we watched it, we analysed each scene thoroughly for the deeper meaning of every scene the director has created.
For our homework, we had to watch the rest of the thriller films analysing the opening 5 minutes of each film. The films that we got were: Birds ( Hitchcock), Panic Room, Hide and Seek, Seven and The silence of the lambs.
By analysing thriller films, this helps with our main task of a 2 minute opening to a thriller production of our own in our groups.
Understanding the codes and conventions of these narratives, makes it alot easier to come up with our own narratives.
Wednesday 19th November 2008
Today, as a group we decided on our thriller narrative. As a group we decided to use the same person who plays the "villian" from our preliminary task for our main production, because his image fits the criteria of a stereotypical Villian in most thrillers.
Plot:
Genre: Action/ Sci fi
Possible locations: Sarah's house/ School hall/ Courtyard.
Associated films: Jaws, Alien, Psycho
Theme: Scary - dark
Following - disappearing
Running - Fear
3 main characters one main killer
2 get killed, the last one, reveals the killer.
Association with Psycho: No visual murder, no physical attack
Storyline:
Victims: Martha, Louise, Saturday
Title: Dead End.

After coming up with the plot to our main task, we drew the plot onto our storyboards and animatic.
Today after school, we recieved all our camera equipments and went straight to Sarah's house to film.
We set up the house accordingly to our storyboard. Each scene was filmed maximum 3 times, minimum 2.
The filiming, went very smoothly, with a few jokes now and then. As this house was Sarah's, she knew every corner and angle we could use for each shot.
We planned that filming would take atleast 3-4 hours, however, we finshed in just 2 hours including a directors cut at the end. This included the directors and the characters were, we each commented on how they felt about filming this. In my opinion, everything went smoothly, apart from the cold weather.

Today, we spend the whole day at the CLC editing our main task. We had to edit it in pairs so myself and Kanar paired up together, and sarah worked on her own.

Wednesday 5th November 2008
In todays lesson we went through all different type of techniques in thriller films.
Friday 7th November 2008
Today was the last lesson of editing our preliminary task. I finally got the hang of editing, and managed to finish editing, with effects. However, the piece of music for the clip is missing, and hopefully if we get the chance, we can add it in soon.

Editing
Friday the 24th October 2008
For today's lesson, we moved on from our original task and focused on thriller films, where our aim for the lesson and homework was to investigate the codes and conventions of thriller films, and their theories as well as sub genres.
Ms Rudhun gave us a website which would help us with this research.
www.mediaguardian.co.uk
During the half term, we have to watch 3 or more thriller films where we have to annotate and identify the sub genres.
Wednesday 22nd October 2008
Using the clips we had filmed on Saturday, which was uploaded for us on apple mac's for us to edit, where we individually had to cut out clips which was not needed for our own assessment. However, for my group, it was slightly harder, as our clip was not in sync with the actions, as a result we had to separate the voice clip and the clip itself to line up the voices with the actions.
I personally, found this task very difficult. After spending majority of the lesson trying to fix up the voices, this left me with little time cutting out unwanted clips.
Saturday 18th October 2008
Today was the day when me and my group goes to South bank centre to film. For each of the scenes, we filmed several shots, so that when it comes to editing we could choose, which shot was the best to use. Each member of our group, too it in turns to film and shared our ideas on the changes that needed to be made.
Towards the end, we used a low angle shot from the characters point of view with a 18o degree shot which was required, although this shot was really difficult, we manage to do it in the end.

The making of our Storyboard
Friday 17th October
Today we went to the CLC ( City learning centre ) to help us with our camera and editing techniques using the programme premiere pro where we had to make three shot clips to practice our editing, cutting and filming. In one of the tasks we had to cut clips and edit so the voices were in sync with the actual images, however, due to some misunderstanding, our clips were did not turn out easy for the group when it came to editing, therefore we must take on board everything we have learnt today. Also, make sure that when filming, we have 3 seconds active before actually filming. At the end of the day we were given filming equipments which Sarah took home to help us with filming tomorrow.
Wednesday 15th October
With our ideas all ready to be filmed we transferred them into our storyboards where we filmed each box one by one to make our animatic for the film. This is where our storyboards are turnt into movies with music to create a rough version of our actual movie. This will help show us whether the movie will be successful or not. We have arranged to all meet on Saturday to film this piece of coursework, meeting at 5 o'clock onwards where as a group we hope will work out as planned.
Monday 13th October
After catching up, and sharing all our ideas with each and other again, we have come to a final decision of having it set at the auditorium at the Royal Festival Hall (Waterloo) Where Sewell suggested after receiving permission by the members of staff on the terrace of level 5. The first scene to be shot is a travelling shot of the first person walking through the auditorium, then a shot of the second person looking through the glass windows approaching the first person where they finally exchange dialogues. To help us we needed two characters, one woman and one man. After discussing on what each characters would fit the criteria asked we have decided to have a man who worked at South bank centre and a girl who was a student at our sixth form, where we could change a few things for them to fit the criteria without too many hassle.
Friday 10th October
On this day I was away for this particular lesson, while my group who consist of( Sewell, Kanar and Sarah) came up with some ideas for our storyboard. For this day that i missed, they looked at several case studies of previous works from students of the same age, that will help us with our coursework so we had an idea of what our target was. I have caught up with the group discussing what we needed to take into account such as different camera angles, use of characters, Filming techniques, props etc. Using the codes and conventions of this particular film genre. After discussing with the group about what i had missed, each member of the group shared their ideas. Sarah suggested on having this film set in a park where someone is running through, feeling panicked and scared towards a mysterious person pushing a gate. Whereas, on the other hand, Kanar came up with the idea of someone sitting in a dark room wearing dark clothes where the other person is in the spotlight.
